Day #2 in Second Life contd.

Dear Notecard,

I don't think I can play this at home very well, not without a lot of lag. I know it's part of the experience and adds to the environment or whatever but I hate how this game is pretty much me waiting around for useless npcs and objects to load. There's this one city in WoW that annoyed the crap out of me just because they put in 23598743975 useless npcs that didn't give quests or weren't vendors etc. and it'd take me forever to zone in and I'd constantly be lagging my way to wherever I needed to go.

Check out this place, there are two huge killer whales jumping around this tiny pool (there are dolphins too but I'm zoomed out a lot so you can't see much) along with a giant yacht, a bunch of little sailboats and water skis and beach towels and a hot tub a dock AND A MECH. WHAT IS A MECH DOING HERE? I DON'T KNOW BUT THERE IT IS.

There isn't even anyone here but me! Me and the orcas! Man, I feel sorry for those orcas, trapped in some shallow pool and they don't even get it to themselves, they have to share.

Free Willy,
Veggie

Day #2 in Second Life

Dear Ghetto Notecard Diary,

Today the class met up in an SFSU room... thinger place. I'm not sure what the term for it in Second Life is.

Previously when Paula (or alee as she is known in Second Life) asked if anyone had made a character of the opposite gender only two or three people had. Bernadette, Jo Seph, and Josh (although I'm not sure if he counts since he said that afterwards he tried to make her look like a male character). Having played many mmos I was seriously baffled that most of the guys hadn't made female characters.

But upon meeting up with everyone today it seems like a lot more people chose different genders. Maybe so they would have something to talk about at the end of this project.

As for me, I haven't quite decided yet but I think I'm determined to not be a human. At the moment it's a toss up between a cute cardboard box robot and a blue dragon thing (I'm leaning towards the box). I haven't quite gotten the hang of these skin things yet and so far most of the freebies seem to be for humans but it's okay.

Anyway, highlights of the day included Jason running around as a huge naked, deformed black... man... thing with a party hat and a car on his arm or something. MC flying around with a giant pinto horse attached to her arm. And last but certainly not least, Adam's Girl Next Door female character finding her way into the porno zone and going down on a random naked guy.

Haha,
Veggie

Day #1 in Second Life contd.

Barely an hour into the game and I spot my first furry already.

Day #1 in Second Life

The first thing I hear upon logging in is a guy broadcasting in some voice chat thing:

"Hey guys! I'm looking at a gay porno!"

They are the tools that gave individuals the power to author, shape, and disseminate information at their fingertips.

“People said 'Wow, there is an asset here, and we should take advantage of it,” said Microsoft's Mundie. And the more established Windows became as the primary operating system, “the more programmers went out and wrote applications for rich-world businesses to put on their computers, so they could do lots of new and different business tasks, which started to enhance productivity even more. Tens of millions of people around the world became programmers to make the PC do whatever they wanted in their own languages. Windows was eventually translated into thirty-eight languages [with more being added all the time]. People were able to become familiar with the PC in their own languages.

In this same time period, some people other than scientists started to discover that if they bought a PC and a dial-up modem, they could connect their PCs tot heir telephones and send e-mails through private Internet service providers – like CompuServe and America Online. “The diffusion of personal computers, fax machines, Windows, and dial-up modems connected to a global telephone network all came together in the late 1980s and early 1990s to create the basic platform that started the global information revolution, “ argued Mundie.

This was more easily said than done. But after Uncle Andrew had struggled in vain with the hat for sometime, two other policemen seized it by the brim and forced it off.

“Thank you, thank you,” said Uncle Andrew in a faint voice. “Thank you. Dear me, I'm terribly shaken. If someone could give me a small glass of brandy --”

“Now you attend to me, if you please,” said the policeman, taking out a very large note-book and a very small pencil.

The spirit of chivalry, still lingering on in France, was opposed in some respects to the overeager cultivation of letters even by men; it must have aroused all the more dislike for women concentrating on literary studies and turning their thoughts away from their primary concern, the sentiments of the heart. The niceties of the code of honor might well make men averse from submitting themselves to the motley criticism attracted by publicity. How much more must they have disliked seeing the creatures entrusted to their protection -- their wives, sisters, daughters -- running the gauntlet of public criticism, or even giving the public the right to make a habit of talking about them! Great talent could triumph over all these considerations, but it was still hard for women to bear reputations as authors nobly, simultaneously combining them with the independence of high rank and keeping up the dignity, grace, and ease, and unself-consciousness that were supposed to distinguish their habitual style and manners. Women were certainly allowed to sacrifice household occupations to a love of society and its pleasures; serious study, however, was condemned as pedantic. If from the very first moment one did not rise above the teasing which went on from all sides, this teasing would end by discouraging talent and poisoning the well of confidence and exaltation.

There are various definitions of different types of research and development, none of which is completely satisfactory because of the considerable overlap between the types. One common distinction is between basic applied research. Basic research is characterized by its long-term horizons and concern with new discover and understanding. Applied research, in contrast, is often nearer term and conducted in relatively well specified areas of enquiry. However, as Nathan Rosenberg has pointed out, basic research is often used to explain how particular technology works, and is therefore already rather prescribed. Sometimes the term 'strategic research' is used to imply longer-term research of high future potential but no immediate value to the firm conducting it. Such a description implies the ability to predict which research will have 'strategic' outcomes for the firm – an ability that is extremely rare.

After a year or two he left the mountains. You see, though still bound by desire of it, the Ring was no longer devouring him; he began to revive a little. He felt old, terribly old, yet less timid, and he was mortally hungry.

'Light, light of Sun and Moon, he still feared and hated, and he always will, I think; but he was cunning. He found he could hide from daylight and moonshine, and make his way swiftly and softly by the dead of night with his pale cold eyes, and catch small frightened or unwary things. He grew stronger and bolder with new food and new air. He found his way into Mirkwood, as one would expect.'

He was still listening to the howling gargles, he knew that, only now it had somehow taken on the semblance of perfectly straightfoward English. This is what he heard...

Howl howl gargle howl gargle how howl howl gargle howl gargle how howl gargle gargle howl gargle gargle gargle howl slurrp uuuurgh should have a good time. Message repeats. This is your captain speaking, so stop whatever you're doing and pay attention. First of all I see from our instruments that we have a couple of hitchhikers aboard. Hello, wherever you are.

He watched a little Sunday afternoon television and constructed conversations with Jessica in his head. At the end of each mental dialogue they would fall into each other's arms, make wild, angry, tear-stained and passionate love; and then everything would be all right.

On Monday morning Richard's alarm failed to go off. He came out into the street at a run at ten to nine, brief case swinging, staring up and down the road like a madman, praying for a taxi. Then he sighed with relief, because a big black care was heading down the road toward him, it's yellow “taxi” sign bright. He waved at it and yelled.

The taxi slid gently past him, ignoring him completely; it turned a corner and was gone.

Shadow walked across the hall. His room was a duplicate of Wednesday's room, down to the print of a bloody sunset on the wall above the bed. He ordered a cheese and meatball pizza, then he ran up a bath, pouring all the motel's little plastic bottles of shampoo into the water, making it foam.

H was too big to lie down in the bathtub, but he sat in it and luxuriated as best he could. Shadow had promised himself a bath when he got out of prison, and Shadow kept his promises.

The pizza arrive shortly after he got out of the bath, and Shadow ate it, washing it down with a can of root beer.

Shadow lay in bed, thinking, This is my first bed as a free man, and the thought gave him less pleasure than he had imagined that it would.
